After some pre-writing in journals, I had students read/review the information in Burroway’s ch. 9 on Poetry pertaining to figurative language and connotation/denotation. We read together the Sylvia Plath poem “Stillborn” later in that chapter, looking for examples of all of these. Then students worked through an exercise that asked them to create their own poem from the model of “Poetry Should Ride the Bus” by Lucile Clifton, where they were to practice personification of poetry through some of their own common, everyday activities.
