For our first full day of class, we started by going over the course norms. Students need to show these to their parents and get the signature slip signed for next time. I also reminded (ha!) everyone to sign up for Remind.com; see Thursday’s post or the top of this page for signup links. After this, we discussed public speaking and what students had learned about public speaking in middle school. I described the Bio Bag assignment everyone will complete starting on Friday, and then Ms. Dailey and I presented exmaple bio bags about ourselves. Students had the last several minutes of class to start brainstorming objects to bring and stories to tell about themselves. Homework: show the course norms handout to your parents and get the signature slip signed for next class.
This class is an opportunity for students to develop and practice their skills in reading and analysis of literature as well as writing. Our various texts will be the vehicles through which they will hone their critical thinking abilities, and our writing exercises will be an outlet of expression for these abilities. We will be reading poetry, short fiction, novels, and dramatic texts. Our objectives are to master the elements of literature, practice the writing process, and improve organization of writing.
