We began our reading of Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian today; students annotated on photocopies of ch. 1 while I read out loud. Then we switched to an article from the Washington Post about the controversy surrounding the name of the local NFL team, which students read silently and annotated. At the end of class, we discussed this article together before I showed students the Mascot Mini-Research activity on Google Classroom they will be working on Thursday. Homework: read and annotate ch. 2 of Part-Time Indian to turn in next class.
SECOND SEMESTER, 2014–15
This class is an opportunity for students to develop and practice their skills in reading and analysis of literature as well as writing. Our various texts will be the vehicles through which they will hone their critical thinking abilities, and our writing exercises will be an outlet of expression for these abilities. We will be reading poetry, short fiction, novels, and dramatic texts. Our objectives are to master the elements of literature, practice the writing process, and improve organization of writing.
